Give me Mighty Mos and Madlib on a track and I’m in heaven. As much as I’m feeling Tyler The Creator, Odd Future and Lil’ B these days. This right here is my element, my center, my core. This is the Hip Hop where I feel most at home. Forever wearing my backpack.
I don’t get exited over Hip Hop music like I use to. Every once in awhile a new single or an album that I’m looking forward to will come out but 8 times out of 10, I’m underwhelmed by it. Those few times I do get something worthwhile are great and it usually tides me over until the next time but these moments are few and far between.
These days there are only a few combinations of names and/or words that when put together incite an almost frenzy like excitement that harkens back to when I was in high school and at the height of my hip hop obsession. Two of those words are “Doom” and “Madlib.” Hearing these words in tandem makes me want to throw on a Rawkus t-shirt, put on my backpack and rant about how true hip hop is about lyricism while putting up “Free Mumia” stickers. Oh, how sweet a new Madvillain album would be right about now.
Well until that happens, Adult Swim has been releasing a track a week in a appropriately titled “Adult Swim Singles Program” where this week just happens to be a brand spanking new Madvillain cut entitled “Papermill.” Underground heads rejoice!
I like to play this game where when I first hear a song, I try my best to guess the producer of it. Then proceed to look it up to see if I’m right or not. I don’t wanna brag but I have a pretty damn good success rate. This time was no exception. From the sample used and the way it was flipped, I managed to narrow it down to two producers: DOOM or Madlib. Proud to say I guessed the right one. Alright, alright, that’s enough Hip Hop snobbery for today.
I’m always a sucker for simplistic yet artsy videos. Directed by Chike and Coodie who have directed another one of my favorites, “Two Words” by Kanye. I’m just hoping The Ecstatic will turn out better than True Magic and The New Danger, both of which I listened to once and since have been demoted to coffee table coasters.
Fuck, I want this. One of my favorite Hip Hop albums of all time, Madvillainy by MF DOOM and Madlib came together so nicely that they had to come out with this special edition box set for the sequel strictly for the heads. This is what the box comes with: a CD, a 7″, a Cassette Tape, a t-shirt and a comic book all in a nice silver line wrapped box. The box is sold exclusively through Stones Throw and goes for about $120 but well worth it if you’re a fan. Get it here.
I came across this song on a Madlib 45′s mix on a Stones Throw Podcast. I heard it, immediately wanted it but had no way on finding it cause I didn’t know the name of it. The podcast didn’t play the song in its entirety so I had very few words from the song to go on to possibly do a search for the lyrics. It took some time but I eventually got it. Just an amazing song. I love the break at the beginning, I want to have a loop of the first 25 seconds of this song just play over and over again.
