ALSD Mixtape Archive Vol. 1

September 7, 2008

I have alot of mixtapes from way back when and I thought it would be good idea to archive my collection. At the very least document them so that I won’t forget what was actually on them. I haven’t heard what was on these in nearly a decade, so I thought it would be nice to revisit them and get a little nostalgic while sharing them with anyone interested. Ahhhhh cassettes, can it be that it was all so simple then?*

*I need to stop using that phrase when I do posts that deal with reminiscing and nostalgia.

This one was from high school and was one I borrowed from a friend but never returned.(That’s actually her handwriting on the tape) Alot of filipino dance artists like the ones you see listed in the picture were what was originally on this. I don’t know if M:G is filipino or not but the rest are. Even Kai to my surprise. I had no idea they were filipino! I bought the “Say You’ll Stay” CD single way back when it came out and I was like, “oh, an all Chinese singing group…cool.” I mean Kai isn’t really a filipino name or word or term is it? I thought it was maybe Chinese or Japanese in origin, but obviously I was wrong.

The thing that surprised me upon revisiting this tape was the scratch practice I recorded. It was my skills at their very “best” and by “best” I mean completely sub par to mediocre. Usually when I hear an old tape of me scratching I cringe and cover my ears with my hands, but there were actually moments on this where I sorta impressed myself…sorta. I’m normally extremely off beat and sloppy, but on this I was uncharacteristically clean.

Rumblfish Muxtape Vol. 2: AM Golden Shower

June 1, 2008

New month means new Rumblfish Muxtape. Recently I’ve been listening to alot of great songs that you would hear if you remember those TV commercials back in the day selling those easy listening CD compilations. You know, stuff you would hear on the AM side of the radio. Some really good stuff here, I tried to keep all of the songs similar in vibe but a few on this playlist I threw in there for good measure and to simply round out the mix. See if you can spot the one or two songs that don’t completely flow with the rest. Until next month folks. Enjoy.

Favorite my Muxtape is you wish and if you also have one, please feel free to post it in comments.

Serenity Now! The Mixtape About Nothing

May 30, 2008

For quite sometime I kept hearing and reading about a rapper named Wale. “Who the fuck is Wale?!”, “I haven’t heard of him, so he must be stupid.” are phrases I would say. Then I did a little research, a little digging, heard The Roots single. I liked what I heard, then I saw the W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. video…..sold. I get it now, I wish I had gotten it sooner but better late than never.

I like Wale, I wish I could say I was up on him from the jump but I can’t. I let my Hip Hop elitist side get the best of me. I really need to correct my snobbish attitude towards new rap. I’m really not prepared to be that old guy screaming how Hip Hop was better in the olden days just yet.(I almost am though) From here on out I will keep an open mind and ear to new rap. Unless of course it has any trace of “Crunk” or “Hyphy” in it. Those are two things I will forever shit on.

Oh yeah, Wale’s “The Mixtape About Nothing” came out today, get it here.

Rumblfish Muxtape Vol. 1: We The Worst

May 1, 2008

Really digging this new site Muxtape. Got hip to this by a post on Soul SIdes(one of my fav blogs btw). It’s a simple site that allows you to create a mixtape and through your browser allow people to listen to it at their leisure. Future Muxtapes I plan on compiling will have more of a theme to them. This first one is to just test the waters and upload some of the songs I’ve been listening to as of late. Enjoy.
