Flashing Lights

Ye is such an anomaly. No other Hip Hop artist at this level of mainstream popularity comes as far from left field as Kanye. From enlisting Jon Brion to help produce his albums, to getting Takashi Murakami to do the album artwork, to never rhyming about drug running and thug life and especially to the original concepts behind his videos. Approaching and doing pretty much everything differently, on paper, Kanye doesn’t seem like an artist that should have this kind of mainstream success. Yet he does and when you see the entire machine in motion, you see exactly why.

Compared to other rap videos, “Flashing Lights” stands out cause it actually displays originality and creativity. I love how the first time you see Kanye, he’s tied up in the trunk.* To be honest, I was expecting something more *ahem*, “flashy” but what I got was much, much darker. Simply an amazing video, Spike Jonze is a genius.

This reminds me a little bit of “Karma Police” by Radiohead.

*The other two parts are coming, I’ll post em when they become available.
