The Standing Eight(March ’09)

March 28, 2009

8. Mother 3: Gameboy Advance emulator with downloadable English translation provided by Starmen.net. It doesn’t get any geekier than this.
7. Jesus Phone 3.0: MMS, check. Copy & Paste, check. Landscape keyboard, check. Video recording mmm…..possibly. Now just give me voice dialing, GPS turn by turn directions and we straight.
6. Connect, Politic, Ditto: Getting in touch with old friends is a good thing.
5. Tuna Barbecue from Mikuni: If you could eat something that was equivalent to heaven on earth, this would be it.
4. Head Porter Karabiners: If they made a Porter reusable grocery tote bag, I’d pay whatever it cost to get one. Oh wait, they did make one.
3. Positive, Social, Contagion: New Staple Spring/Summer 09 line is out!
2. Where The Wild Things Are: My second most anticipated movie of 2009.(It only falls short to Inglorious Basterds) Spike Jonze is the only one who could do this movie in my eyes. Watch the amazing trailer.
1. Love The World>I.R.I.N.A.: Officially this is my favorite song at the current moment but secretly, on the low-low, it’s really this.

I-R-I-N-A

March 24, 2009

This and “Slow Dance” by Keri Hilson have been banging around my head for the last few days. I just can’t seem to shake them from my consciousness! Not that I’m complaining, both songs are incredibly dope. When I first heard “I-R-I-N-A” I didn’t know what the chorus meant. I thought maybe it was an acronym or something at first. I pulled up the video on Youtube and solved the mystery. Pretty cool story on how it actually came to fruition. Here’s Ryan Leslie in his own words breaking the whole thing down:

SONG:

I’ve spent the last 2 weekends shooting a crazy photo story for my single “Diamond Girl” starring Russian fashion model Irina Sheik. The concept required that we have some chemistry on set and since I speak very little Russian, I started singing this song and melody to break the ice and lighten up the vibe. By the end of the shoot, the boys on my staff suggested I lay it down, so here it is.”

VIDEO:

“A few months ago, I hired Guillaume Doubet, a talented young director from France to come and work on our video team. He came up with the concept to shoot this video at double speed so when we played it back in real-time, it would have the slow motion effect that you see. So – imagine dancing and singing this song at 2x the speed all in one continuous take – no edits. Watch closely, the end of the video where I walk off screen really gives it away. PLEASE NOTE: This means that the video was shot in exactly 113 seconds (or 1/2 the time it will take you to watch it)”

BUGGIN OUT 09′

March 18, 2009

Cons and Cudi with a nice homage to Tribe’s original Buggin Out. Directed by Rik Cordero, yadda, yadda, yadda, it’s dope. The more important issue here is where I can buy those bugged out eyes so I can put them on anytime anyone wants to take a picture of me. “Oh, you’re taking a picture? Hold on, gimme one second…” Someone let me know when this information becomes available.

Why did they purposefully make it so that 88-Keyes sounds like he’s rapping from a telephone? It’s like that on his entire album! Is this like the new Auto Tune?

Was Blind But Now I See

March 13, 2009

I realize now that J Dilla was a god. Maybe it was the frame of mind I was at during the time I first heard his beats. Or maybe it was the type of artists he was producing for that didn’t click with me but I just never really understood the praise he got. I was a little peeved that I couldn’t grasp the brilliance in him that others saw. Now, I don’t want to toot my own horn but I feel I have a pretty darn good understanding and overall appreciation of Hip Hop. So what was it exactly that those in the same elitist, snobby, pretentious league I considered myself to be in, saw that I didn’t?

Well whatever the case may be, I can safely say now that I get it. Label me a complete convert. I went from being the trouble maker sinner kid who was friends with the kids that went to Sunday school to full blown Born Again Child Evangelist. I can see clearly now the genius of the man. I just hope I’m not too late and maybe if I start repenting now, the day I make it to wherever it is you go to when you die, the Hip Hop gods will allow me entrance.

Awhile back ?uestlove wrote an amazing post on Okayplayer about J-Dilla doing what he does best. I suggest going here to read and take in the audio samples.(I’ve been listening to them for the last hour or so) Hopefully after reading it, you’ll agree to have witnessed a miracle and Dilla will have changed your life as well. RIP James Dewitt Yancey.

$100 bills were being used exclusively as Kleenex tissue and toilet paper during this photo shoot. The influence in this picture is immense. The pillars of Japanese street wear. Nigo + HF. Hypebeast nerds should build a shrine surrounding this photo and kneel and pray to it on a daily basis. Recognize the gods.

Shit Popped Off

March 1, 2009

Detox

I need Dre back. I need there to be balance. I need both coasts to be strong again. With the rise and dominance of the south, it feels like Hip Hop is on the verge of bottoming out and collapsing in on itself(if it hasn’t already). With a mere stroke of his hand, the good doctor can single-handedly bring the left coast back to proper form. I haven’t been obsessed with a west coast album since Doggystyle and The Chronic!(The Chronic 2001 didn’t do it for me) That was nearly 20 years ago! It’s been waaaaay too long. *sniff* I need to love again. Please Doctor…just make me love again.
