ALSD Top 8 Movies of 2009

May 11, 2009

This year seems to be a pretty good one for movies. I was really happy with the way Watchmen turned out and it seems there are even more movies that will be coming out later this year that I’m actually excited to see. Here’s my list of movies I want to see in the theaters and not just simply download.

Inglorious Basterds

Inglorious Basterds: I’m a Tarantino fanboy. He falls into a league of directors where I love pretty much everything they do. M. Night Shyamalan, Wes Anderson, Hayao Miyazaki and Quentin Tarantino. I’ve liked, no loved everything he’s done. I thought he might have slipped when I watched “Death Proof” but I’ve seen that movie three times since then and have loved it more upon each successive viewing. I’ve been following the progress of Basterds for a looong time. It’s been in development for I’d say about 8, 9 years now. Finally I get my long standing hunger for a Tarantino War movie satiated. The only gripe I have is that I wish the Basterds were cast with more known actors than Jewish actors who I don’t. It makes more sense for the movie I get it, but still, whatever.

Where The Wild Things Are

Where The Wild Things Are: Meet the runner up for my most anticipated movie of the year. If they gave this movie to anyone else, it probably would’ve been made into a Disney/Pixar-esque sugar coated family film kids would have come in droves to see in repeated viewings. But thankfully, Where The Wild Things Are was handed over to the one person who could do this movie justice and be made exactly the way it should be made. I feel once people see this in the theaters, they will realize that they could not have given this movie to no better person than Spike Jonze. I can’t wait for this.

Paper Heart

Paper Heart: Paper Heart has an interesting premise in that it isn’t a real documentary but it’s about a girl, Charlene Yi, who is making a documentary about how she can’t fall in love but in the process meets Michael Cera(Yi’s real life boyfriend) and thus a love story begins. So let me recap so I can get it straight in my head, it’s a movie shot as a documentary but still really is just a movie about Charlene Yi and Micheal Cera, who play themselves in this movie/documentary and how they fall in love, but are already dating in real life. This movie is so meta.

Black Dynamite Poster

Black Dynamite: I’ve done a post on this movie already. Just watch the trailer. There, that’s it. That’s all I’m gonna say to get people to watch this film. Watch the trailer and have your life changed.

Ip Man

Ip Man: I can get this right now. I can import this movie as I type this. This is the only movie on the list that’s already out. I can head over to Yesasia and order the HK version of this. You know what? Fuck it………………………………………….there, done. It’ll be at my house in about two weeks. Donnie Yen as Ip Man. That’s all I needed to know for me to pick this up. Best martial arts movie to come out this year, I’m sure of it.

PONYO

Ponyo: Miyazaki is one of my heroes. You have to realize that anything we can get from Miyazaki at this point is a gift. The guy has been close to retirement for years and he has said on several occasions that his current movie would be his last. He’s been saying that since 2001, which was about 4 movies ago. So everytime news breaks on him directing another film, I get on my knees and thank the animation gods for blessing us with yet another masterpiece. Miyazaki does either far reaching, huge epic fantasy movies or small contained slice of life movies with fantasy elements. Ponyo is very much the latter. I don’t even know that exact premise for the film and to be honest, I don’t need to. Oh and I hope you notice and appreciate the dichotomy of having Ponyo and Black Dynamite on the same list.

Soul Power

Soul Power: One of my favorite documentaries of all time is When We Were Kings and this is like a complimentary piece for that film. Soul Power takes a look at the amazing musical side of this whole event. If you love documentaries(like me) and absolutely love soul music(like me), this movie should be a no brainer. James Brown with a moustache?! C’mon you can’t fucking beat that.

Kobe Doin' Work

Kobe Doin’ Work: One day the list will go: Jordan is The God. Kobe is The Second Coming. Lebron shall be The King. 1, 2 and 3. There’s the all time greatest list right there. This Spike Lee Joint gives us a glimpse of Kobe Doin’ Work. Oh you can watch this on ESPN and not the theater but whatever. It’s a movie, came out this year. It works.

Live Action Cowboy Bebop? Survey Says: FUCK NO!

July 23, 2008

Ugh. Cowboy Bebop live action movie?! What a fucking huge kick in the dick. I can’t believe this shit. Okay maybe I can, I mean wasn’t Eva suppose to have a live action adaptation? Ugh, whatever. Bebop with no Shinichiro Watanabe? No Yoko Kanno? No thanks.

The live action movie will look similar to this.

Let’s Take It Back: Daytona 500

March 11, 2008

I really don’t have to say much about this. I mean this video pretty much has all the ingredients to make me go totally bonkers. It was Ghostface’s debut album, which was his best album to date and NOT Supreme Clientèle like almost everyone else seems to think. It was RZA on the obscure sampling tip, it was Rae, Cappa and Ghost verbally murdering said beat, it had the Force MD’s on the hook. And if that wasn’t enough, the video was fucking Speed Racer!

Oh by the way, did I mention the video was fucking Speed Racer?! Japanese Anime + Hardcore East Coast 90’s Hip Hop = My head exploding upon seeing this for the first time.

Gurren Lagann

February 23, 2008

It’s tough for me to warm up to giant robot anime. Reason being is that I must compare all of them to Neon Genesis Evangelion. I know how ridiculous that sounds, I mean just because I feel that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is the best kung fu film of all time* doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be able to appreciate other kung fu films. Cause I do, but when it comes to watching other giant mecha anime, it’s hard for me to shake Eva from my consciousness. Yeah it’s absurd I know but I can’t help it.

If anyone can make me watch another one and have me give it a fighting chance, it’s Gainax. Anytime the name Gainax is attached to an anime, I make it a point to at the very least check it out. After such quality anime such as FLCL, His & Her Circumstances(or “Kare Kano” for all you geeky purists out there), Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Gunbuster 2 and of course Evangelion, they have more than earned my trust. Except for Nadia, that was total crap.

So what’s Gurren Lagann about? I don’t really know. I figure it’s about giant robots which I assume will fight other giant robots. I’m sure there will be a love story of some sort. I’ll bet there will be some comedy elements and some fan service. Most likely someone will die. Oh and there’s this mole looking thing that seems to be the mascot of the series. The thing that they can make toys of and make millions of dollars from.

Does it really matter? All you really need to know is: it’s Gainax so the animation will be top notch, the character design will be really, really good, breasts will most definitely be bouncing and robots are cool. Sold. The first DVD of the series comes out in a few days. Buy it here.

Lupin x Cowboy Bebop

February 9, 2008

Arguably two of my favorite anime series getting the mash up. I love Lupin. I love Cowboy Bebop. I love Lupin getting the Bebop intro treatment. Props to whoever put this together. And for good measure, here’s the original Bebop intro. Seeing this makes me want to break out my DVD set and watch the whole series all over again. Has there ever been a cooler anime? Actually the question should be, “Has there ever been a cooler anime NOT done by Shinichiro Watanabe?” cause Champloo is right up there with Bebop.

Paprika

October 4, 2007

Paprika

I’ve been waiting a long time for the DVD of Paprika to be released. Unfortunately the theatrical release of this didn’t make it to my neck of the woods, so that obviously made the wait that much worse. So i’m happy to say that the DVD will finally be released on November 27th. Along with Hayao Miyazaki, Hideaki Anno and Shinichiro Watanabe, Satoshi Kon is one of the few people in anime that has earned my complete respect and trust. Whenever he does anything new, I owe it to myself to check it out.

Rebuild Of Evangelion

October 1, 2007

Rebuild Of Evangelion

Let it be known that Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favorite anime series of all time. I am of the camp that feels that it is something that should never be touched again, never be tampered with, never be continued and absolutely never be remade. So when I heard that it was being “re-imagined”(which is another way of saying “remade”) with the title “Rebuild of Evangelion”, I was fucking steaming. Like steam coming out of both ears just like in the cartoons STEAMING. When I saw that it was being put out by Gainax, it eased the blow a bit. When I found out that Hideaki Anno was involved in it as well and was actually the one spearheading it, that made me accept it. When I finally saw the trailer for it, I completely changed my mind on the whole thing and now am totally on board. I went from trying to sabotage the band wagon, to demand on being the one driving it.

Interstella 5555

This is very cool. Daft Punk’s Interstella 5555 Action Figure set is being sold at Turntable Lab right now. If you’ve seen either the “One More Time” or “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” videos you’ll know where these came from.(The DVD is incredible) Now you can recreate both those videos in stop-motion animation in the privacy of your home. These sets have a limited run of 5555 produced worldwide.
