Was Blind But Now I See(Repost)

February 7, 2011

I posted this back in 2009 and since I don’t think I can write anything more that can express how much in awe I am of J Dilla, I thought I’d just repost that old entry which is just as relevant as it was when I first posted it. I’ve re-read Questlove’s story numerous times and every single time it never fails to amaze me. Going through and listening to the sound clips just make miss him more and more. The man, the myth, the legend. Happy Birthday James “Dilla” Yancey.

I realize now that J Dilla was a god. Maybe it was the frame of mind I was at during the time I first heard his beats. Or maybe it was the type of artists he was producing for that didn’t click with me but I just never really understood the praise he got. I was a little peeved that I couldn’t grasp the brilliance in him that others saw. Now, I don’t want to toot my own horn but I feel I have a pretty darn good understanding and overall appreciation of Hip Hop. So what was it exactly that those in the same elitist, snobby, pretentious league I considered myself to be in, saw that I didn’t?

Well whatever the case may be, I can safely say now that I get it. Label me a complete convert. I went from being the trouble maker sinner kid who was friends with the kids that went to Sunday school to full blown Born Again Child Evangelist. I can see clearly now the genius of the man. I just hope I’m not too late and maybe if I start repenting now, the day I make it to wherever it is you go to when you die, the Hip Hop gods will allow me entrance.

Awhile back ?uestlove wrote an amazing post on Okayplayer about J-Dilla doing what he does best. I suggest going here to read and take in the audio samples.(I’ve been listening to them for the last hour or so) Hopefully after reading it, you’ll agree to have witnessed a miracle and Dilla will have changed your life as well. RIP James Dewitt Yancey.

Happy Holidays!

December 25, 2010

This was my Christmas song of last year for a myriad of reasons but despite all of that, I still and always will love this song. C’mon, Wham + Christmas = A win for all of the world.

I nominate this song for the “A Christmas song most people haven’t heard but when they hear it for the first time, they fall in love with it.” award.

Ugh, this song is so good it hurts. So good I almost wish it wasn’t a Christmas song. So I don’t seem weird listening to this song heavy in like the middle of July or something.

I remember taping this song off of the radio.(102.5 to be specific) This song is very much a product of it’s time and hasn’t aged all that well but I still like it. R.I.P. Left Eye.

Can we burn all recordings of “This Christmas” other than the Donny Hathaway version, please? Thanks.

Oh and my nephew has been going through some rough chemo therapy and apparently it hasn’t been going so well. He’s been holed up at the hospital for a week and went home just yesterday on Christmas eve. I got a text from my cousin informing me that he’s going to be on the local news this very Christmas morning. So here’s to him. And to my friends and family and anyone who has ever visited this site, have a safe and happy holidays.

Now leave me alone while I spend the day watching NBA Basketball. I should get some sleep though as I’ve been up all night. Oh and for what its worth, I have Chicago, Orlando, LA, OKC and Golden State all winning today. Let’s hope I can stay awake to watch them all.

Urinating On The Game

December 14, 2010

I don’t care how many underage girls Kells pisses on, one thing that won’t ever change is that black people will always love and support him, period. R. Kelly completely shuts the place down. One of the best performances I’ve seen this year.

A Take Away Show Feat. Aloe Blacc

This is amazing. That’s all there is to it. As far as what I like personally, this is hitting on so many levels. I’m just gonna let the video speak for itself. I posted the second part of this because I particularly like “You Make Me Smile” and the cover of my favorite Bill Withers song “Use Me Up”. Part One is just as good so please check it out for the full experience.

“I Wanna Be Your Mother And Your Sister Too…”

July 9, 2010

Prince, even though you hate the internet, just know that there is a small part of it that still loves you.

I ain’t got no money
I ain’t like those other guys you hang around
And it’s kinda funny
But they always seem to let you down
And I get discouraged
‘Cause I never see you anymore
And I need your love, babe yeah
That’s all I’m living for, yeah
I didn’t wanna pressure you, baby
But all I ever wanted to do
I wanna be your lover
I wanna be the only one that makes you come running
I wanna be your lover
I wanna turn you on, turn you out, all night long, make you shout
Ow, lover! Yeah
I wanna be the only one you come for
I wanna be your brother
I wanna be your mother and your sister, too
There ain’t no other
That can do the things that I’ll do to you
And I get discouraged
‘Cause you treat me just like a child
And they say I’m so shy, yeah
But with you I just go wild!
I didn’t wanna pressure you, baby.
But all I ever wanted to do
I wanna be your lover
I wanna be the only one that makes you come running
I wanna be your lover
I wanna turn you on, turn you out, all night long make you shout
Ow, lover! Yeah
I wanna be the only one you come for, yeah

I don’t know how long this video will be up so enjoy it while you can before the Purple Police comes and shuts it down.

“Sweet Baby” by Stanley Clarke & George Duke

May 16, 2010

On the short list of my favorite songs of all time, this one is the most likely to give the listener diabetes. You couldn’t tell by the look of the cover but this song is 100% sugary sweet. It’s the kind of song you would see compiled in one of those AM Gold collections they would sell on TV on some infomercial. I want to buy the actual LP of this just for the enlarged picture alone. Cause, I mean…..just look at it!

Look how cool those two motherfuckers are. It’s as if they’re saying: “Yeah, yeah we’re here. Can we get this goddamn photo shoot over with already? We got pussy to slay and cool music to play. Where are my goddamn cigarettes?”

Oh and here’s Jay’s version “Dear Summer”. It actually preceded Lu’s version but for some stupid reason, I can’t get the file to play so I’m linking to it.

Answer Me

June 18, 2008

Ever hear a song and love it the first time you hear it? Okay. How about hear it months later and completely loving it more than you previously did? This, for me is one of those songs. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are arguably one of my favorite bands of all time. Only three albums deep and they seem to have captured a sound in soul not seen since the late 60’s/mid 70’s. The key seems to be not only their strict use of instruments and analogue recording equipment from the 70’s, but also their natural understanding of music from that era of funk/soul. I had no idea it was Sharon herself playing the piano on this! One of my favorite songs. No other band cooler than the Dap-Kings. Quote me on that.
